Scientists from France and South Africa will test and treat almost everyone in at least 30 South African regions, who are infected by the HIV-AIDS virus, in what would be termed as the biggest experiment for eradicating the transmission of virus causing AIDS. Every year around 2.7 million people acquire this infection and around 2 million die due to this virus.
This experiment will last for five years starting from now, said the head of the HIV-AIDS unit of Geneva University Hospital in Switzerland. Mr. Barnard Hirschel added that the scientists will begin the treatment right away for at least half the region, for those infected by HIV. For the remaining half region, they will act once the patients’ immune system fails to fight against these germs.
Today, at the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Mr. Barnard Hirschel further clarified that this trial, the outcome of the researchers two years pain and plan, is intended to observe the effectiveness of the treatment in reduction and elimination of the transmission of HIV. As per the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the patient will start getting anti HIV drugs as soon as his virus fighting cells fall below a standard level.
