Previous year, if we wanted to eat cow grilled, we needed to go to restaurant or bought beef to grill and cook at home. However, we can find many places for selling cow grilled even at a small store, pub, and some places along the street near market nowadays. According to the confirmation of people who are enjoying drinking and eating outside home stated that they needed to go to big restaurant for eating cow grilled cost $10 for each dish, but now even the small stores along the street also sell this food with 10,000Riel per dish.

According to the habit of grilling the whole cow in front of the store to public has been criticized due to the inappropriate of morality, virtue and effect to Khmer’s belief for the reason that cows are the big animals used for farming and advantage to human; especially cow is regarded as the holy animal due to legendary “Preah Ko Preah Keo”.

“Showing off cow grilled in the public is likely to describe Khmer people are cruel and non-religious; especially it makes foreigners and tourists misunderstand Cambodia society is full of violation”, said by Mr. Un Ngeng, the citizen living in Phnom Penh city. Some hidden names whose are the owners of the restaurants said “We decide to grill the entire cows in front of the public because our restaurants do not have enough space to cook beside this yard. Moreover, it is in the purpose of showing to clients for making them easy in ordering. We do not know this action could affect Cambodian’s feeling and belief at all.”

Refer to Srey Pov, the young seller whose sells the cow grill in her cart at west Toul Tumpung market stated this was the way to make her food sell well; particularly no polices came to ban her beside warning her not to put her cart on the street. From 4pm to 5pm, she would be allowed to take her cart on the street unless she paid from 2000Riel to 5000Riel.

However, most Cambodian people are Buddhist, honest, gentle, virtue and compassion inside heart. We do not stop people to avoid eating beef, but we just suggest people and the sellers not to show off the entire cow grilled in the public because of the serious affection to Khmer’s belief as well as morality. It does not only make tourists, but also young generation feel the slaughter and violation in Cambodia society is custom.
