Ilya KovalchukDevil’s general manager, Lou Lamoreillo was certainly called as “Loophole Lou” once upon a time but now that nickname seems to be in danger as the NHL has rejected the 17 year old contract which was around $102 million as now NHL doesn’t believe that Kovalchuk could play at the age of 44.

Also a spokesperson reveled that NHL never in its entire history had such a long history of contract stretching to 17 years and till the time the player turned 44. It came as a little shock to the Devils as they thought NHL would renew it as they did on long term basis in the past. However, this failed to happen and the ironical thing was that the players just celebrated during wee hours of Tuesday as they thought Kovalchuk would be signed again.

Also, it was seen that Lamoreillo couldn’t manage the legal aspects completely all on his own and hence had a secretary under him which could help him in that. So here; came the problem regarding direct contact with the players and the staff and hence this could be taken as one reason for sure. However the statement issued officially states that, “The contract has been rejected by the League as a circumvention of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Under the CBA, the contract rejection triggers a number of possible next steps that may be elected by any or each of the NHLPA, the Player and/or the Club. In the interim, the player is not entitled to play under the contract, nor is he entitled to any of the rights and benefits that are provided for there under. The League will have no further comment on this matter pending further developments.”
